Rolodecks

It’s 16 days into 2012. I quietly launched the project that I had been working on for some time as the new year rolled in ( http://rolodecks.net ). It seems to be attracting some sort of good attention. It’s been a long road to get here, but I’m excited. Hopefully what I’ve set out to do with it comes to fruition, wouldn’t hurt having a large team behind the project to drive it forward; there’s so much that one would like to do all at once but it’s not possible, perseverance is key it seems.

Hello 2012

Eight months since my last post … clearly I’m not one to reflect often at all. A great deal of time has passed, projects have started, fell away, and other such things but my pet, Rolodecks, is alive and well. Here’s to seeing what the year has in store. (payback for blood and sweat would be nice though). Let me get back to endless nights of code.

Motivation to go

I think we all face this problem. Maybe some more than others, but we surely all do nonetheless.

It’s become more of an issue for me since I started out on this journey of creating something to call my own. I’ve been working on a project that has stolen my free time, my sleep, my interest in television even my passion for gaming (I kid you not). I’m not complaining; it’s nice to have found something so great to put my time and energy into. It’s far better than the regular grind of working for someone else on projects that have no soul or scope for any expression.

I’ve found however that over time, and worryingly as I inch closer to aching completion, that I am unable to actually stay motivated for the long periods that I used to. This is not due to any lack of enthusiasm for my idea however.

I can’t give up now though; I’ve come so far already.

Wish me luck. I may be needing it in the near future.

The Africa Problem

Over the past year I’ve had my eyes opened to a great deal. I’ve lamented the lack of and then seen opportunity on African soil. The African continent is just such a conundrum when it comes to Information Technology; there are connectivity issues, financial issues and a whole lot more that really hinder the progress of the internet market.

I spent a good amount of time last year trying to find a plan of attack to make my mark on the vast entity that is the world wide web. I kept coming across the same problem; this motherland this continent with so much potential is hindered so much by the borders that split and separate it’s people.

Each and every country has it’s own challenges, it’s own interests, it’s own set of particular issues that would require one to actually negotiate and understand in order to actually attract a market there.

I had this understanding. I wanted to create something that would affect people, that would spark change, progress, more ideas. I wanted to be able to lay claim to an idea that reached out and touched people across the continent. I arrived at this conclusion once I realised that a start up that would touch the WORLD would be hard to come by; originality is limited. There are so many things that have already been done, and in a lot of cases done well; sadly this means that one needs to think in a more creative manner in order to come up with an idea that may be more of a niche. The problem with this is that the more targeted the idea, chances are that the market is likely to be smaller.

I wanted to make a splash, large waves, not indiscernible ripples. That’s when I stumbled across the idea that has consumed me for the past few months. It has opened my eyes. Continue reading

I’m Back

So I’ve been VERY neglectful of this blog. I guess I’ve been distracted, well there are a lot of things happening that I have to write about, so expect me to be actually making an effort to be presenting my thoughts here on a more regular basis.

It’s a new year, approximately 6 months since I originally created this blog; and the things I’m currently busying myself with have changed a great deal.

I’ve scrapped my idea of hosting and running an online magazine in favour of a “top secret” project that i’ve been pouring my blood, sweat & tears into.

I’ve also been busying myself finding new avenues to express myself creatively. I have not been too keen on the regular code pushing that is the developers world in the corporate structures of the workplace. My happiness seems to be found in creating things for myself. To be honest; that’s what has grown to be the most important thing for me; the answer to the question “am I happy?”. Well at this particular juncture; as thin in the pocket as I am, I’m happy, & in my opinion; that’s what is important.

My Online Identity Crisis

If you spend any amount of time online or watching any international news, you’ll have noticed that there’s been a little bit of hoopla about Facebook and a quick Google search will show you just how much has been made of their privacy and security policies.

From having people’s “private chats” turn out to be not so private, to making people’s profiles public by default, there have been quite a few issues that have been raised about Mark Zuckerburg and his company’s practices. Continue reading
